Planning & Organisation: Shot lists
We created a shot list so we know exactly what we wanted to do when we start filming. This allows us to know what shots we need to do or what shots we have missing; it allows us to be more organised and complete our filming in a more efficient and organised way. It is allow a good way to not waste time discussing what we wanted to do or could do next whilst out filming.

Planning: Location ideas for music video
Locations for music video by Slidely Slideshow
The dominant colours in these location shots are: green, brown, gold, red brick, grey, red graffiti. The red writing may also provide a contrasting colour for our digipak and the advert.
The music video will represent a rural culture. There are many music videos that are set in urban locations and we felt a rural location would challenge conventions a little. Neale said genre is about "repetition and difference" so we want to use singing into camera, close ups of the artist, costumes that are Indie eg black and white, piercings, her hood, a burgundy jacket to establish and anchor the genre as Indie. However, our 'difference' will be in the locations and the colouration of the video.

Planning: Star image
Who is our star image?
Ethan Brown, 17, Male
Role? Singer and plays the role of the boy who is madly in love with the girl who is playing hard to get.
Charmaine Abotchy, 17, Female
Role? The girl who is playing hard to get with Ethan but then eventually falls for him.
Why have we chosen Ethan?
We chose Ethan do be in our music video as he has previously stared in an A2 music video before; from experience he will have known what half to expect. He has quite a confident nature, so we didn't think he would have a problem singing into camera and acting in a 'loving' way towards another actor for the music video. As he previously was a drama student we also thought that this would be beneficial with him being able to perform well. As well as this, Ethan has the right sort of look for our music video, he wears dark clothing which is what we want in our music video.
Why have we chosen Charmaine?
We have chose Charmaine to be in our music video, as like Ethan was previously a drama student, so would be able to act as well as being able to follow instructions well. Charmaine hasn't performed in a music video before, however with being a drama student along side Ethan, (meaning they know each other well) and her confident persona, we thought that she would be reliable in our music video. Charmaine also has the perfect look that we want for our music video, again like Ethan she wears dark clothing and she also has numerous piercings which fits well with our genre.
Along with Charmaine's confidence, the costume choices give her a voyeuristic look; this will appeal to a male audience and fits with Laura Mulvey's theory about the 'male gaze'.

Research: Target Audience Research
Target audience research from joliequirke
From this questionnaire into target audience research I found that:
Black, white and grey are the most popular colours.
Ancillary tasks:
Green is very dominant in our music video. Green is symbolic [Barthes] of peace and nature. This might be a good complimentary colour to use.

Research: Costume/Mise en scene
Taylor Swift - Wildest Dream
One Direction - Drag me down
Lady Gaga - Judas
Nicki Minaj - Superbass
Sam Smith - Writings on the wall
Ellie Goulding - On my mind
All these examples of music videos shows various examples of individuality and relates to the song in terms of costume, make-up and location. Choosing the correct costume and set design I have found is a crucial part of making a music video; it allows the song to be explained more with the appearance of the characters and allows the emotions of the artist to be shown. For example in Lady Gaga's video for 'Judas', the overall colour theme is black with a small amount of colour; with the use of the bikes this also represents the type of character that she is trying to portray. Ellie Gouldings video for 'On my mind' has quite an opposite approach to that character that is trying to be portrayed. The use of light pale colours shows purity and could symbolise her being more vulnerable. In my own video I am going to think about what colours I could use that would show the personality in the star images, and choose locations that would work well with this.

Research: Locations in music videos

Looking at location ideas from existing music videos, has shown me that locations can be shown and made to be effective in different ways, with the use of different shots.
For example the first shot shows a close up of the lead singer, but is being filmed in a studio. This could be something I would consider trying for my performance shots, as I think if done correctly it can work well with particular songs or genres.
The second shot is a long shot which has allowed the location to be fully shown to the audience, and gives detail to the surroundings of the singer.
I don't think that this is something that I would use in my own music video, as the story I want to use within my video, only posses particular characters.
The final shot is a medium shot of the lead singer walking away from camera. This allows the audience to see the singers surroundings just how he is. I like the idea of using this as I think it can be more effective than using a point of view shot.
Research: adverts in magazines for digipaks/new releases/tour and tour dates
Code & conventions
- Central text
- A range of font styles and sizes
- Institutional details
- Performance shot image
- looking into camera.
Yeezus : i like the bold font on this one. The phrase "New album" is a great idea and conventional. I like the use of the fonts but I think we should aim for something more subtle and bot quite as simple.
Rolling Stones: When the 1975 make an announcement he type writes it and posts it on twitter. This is where a great deal of my inspiration came from. It looks vintage and nostalgic.
Justin Bieber - I love the close up of this. I think this would suit Ethan as he has a good star image. The boxes and angles are interesting and this would work well with black and white.
Example of TV advertisement: unfortunately we won't be able to create a TV advert for our digipak however, it is part of a promotional package.
Research: Codes and conventions
What are codes and conventions?
These are ways of constructing meaning in media texts and are generally an excepted way of doing things. With this audiences can become familiar with particular genres and it can be made sure that certain texts works well and fits with the genre; it allows them to be easily recognised whilst making it easier for the audience to understand.
This can be separated into two categories: technical & symbolic.

Technical:
- Camera shots/angles
- Editing
- Sound
- Equipment and technology used
Symbolic:
- Meanings that can be hidden behind what is obvious to see (e.g. facial expression, mise en scene)
An important convention used in a music video would be singing into camera. This can be used with any genre but could also portray a message with the singer telling a story and speaking directly to the audience.
Here are some examples of various artists singing into camera:

Research: Analysis of mise en scene, props and set design
This music video is very unique and different and is set in a futuristic time. It is a narrative video as it tells us a story about various people who are against each other, as well as portraying a powerful message for women to pick themselves up when something or someone is pulling them down, influencing self confidence.
This is a high angle long shot. It is quite voyeuristic and it could be argued that Mulvey's male gaze can be applied. However, the connotations of the red font "Bad Blood" imply not only passion but power and danger.
This is a great angle and something we could target in our video.
This shot is very voyeuristic. The costume is sexual and revealing. It is an interesting set design with the female and the dog in the frame. It is a studio shot; it represents a modern woman. She is a dominant female and as Perkins said " stereotypes are not simple" it signifies woman as strong. It seems impossible to stereotype women in a modern western society. We also want to use a modern strong woman however she does fall for him at the end signifying her vulnerability. Therefore we have both modern and traditional representations. White is used here to signify a coldness rather than purity and innocence. This is a location shot and the colours have been manipulated and blues and grey levels raised. This is something we could also do.
This is a very futuristic set design. She is now wearing black: Todorov's binary opposition works well here showing the two sides of her. The costume change is effective and this is something we want to do.
This is the end shot. It signifies their dominance and power - the girls against the world. Propps narrative theory is difficult to apply as the main narrative is women against women. there is no traditional villain.

Research: Locations for music video
These images I have collected I hope to find similar locations to use for my music video. With the colours used I think these locations suit my genre, and finding somewhere similar to these will look most effective in my video.
I've presented these few images found from music videos because I like the way the locations have been used. Again the colours used suit the genre I have chosen for my music video, and I like the idea of trying a shot in black and white.

Group post: Company name and logo
The company name we have decided on is 'JC Records'. We have chosen thhis as even thought its not very creative, it is a short, simple name and a mixture of the first letter in our names. (Jolie and Charlotte) The logo will be 'JC' in bold letters and 'records' in smaller letters underneath. I produced this lgo on Adobe Elements 11. I think its simple but looks quite professional and smart.

Blueprint Film Visit
Today we had a visit from one of the producers from Blueprint film in Lincoln. We managed to gain a lot of knowledge about what its like to be a producer, which we will be able to put to use when filming our music video. This really helped us to understand how to organise our planning for our music video and gave us the opportunity for someone who has experience in film to give us some feedback of our ideas. Overall after the visit I felt I had gained a lot more knowledge in how to plan my filming and how to organise my shot lists, as well as feeling a lot more confident in the ideas that we had for are music video.

Research: Establishing shot
This establishing shot shows the lead singer (Matthew Healy) and a rectangle which is a significant part of the image for The 1975, as it is something that they came up with for their bands symbol. The shot is also in black and white which is another identification of the bands image.
This establishing shot is from the song Fireflies by Owlcity, it is of the singer turning on what appears to be a keyboard and this is when the song starts. I do like how this links together and a close up is used so we can clearly see that this is what is trying to be shown.
This establishing shot shows again the lead singer of The 1975 (Matthew Healy) who is with a girl who appears to be his girlfriend in this video. The medium shot allows us to identify this and shows that the video itself is based around them.
This shot came straight after the medium close up of the two characters in the video. It tells us the name of the same and who it is by, I like how this is centre frame and is clear and stands out. This is something I may consider using with my own video as I think that it really fits well with the song.

Research: Analysis of a music video with the genre I am considering making
Music video: Imagine Dragons - Radioactive
Establishing shot: The establishing shot (low angle shot) of a girl who is walking through woodlands. The girl isn't part of the group so this shot could indicate that the video is about her. This location is something I like and want to use something similar for my music video. It is quite a low angle making her look distant.
At the end of the first build up there is an extreme close up of the girl which then cuts onto performance when the beat drops. I like the way this is edited and using close up shots really captures an imagine on the characters emotions, which I want to achieve in my music video.
This next shots shows what the video is about. It is a high angle shot which allows the image to show everything that is happening. It could also represent the way that the people watching the puppets fight have more power over them. The mise en scene is detailed. The lighting focuses on the arena and the costumes are Western.
This shot shows one of the numerous times the video cuts onto performance. I like the location of where the singer is performing and the use of the drum which is in time with the beat of the song, it reflects feeling from the singer onto the viewer. This links to Goodwin and editing, visuals to match lyrics and beat. The lighting is low key and the smoke and wall seems urban.
Even though these next two shots has use of imagination, as puppets is something unique and different to use in a music video; there is also a traditional theory with there being a 'good guy' and a 'bad guy'. Through the video the purple puppet seems to display an image of being the 'bad guy' who defeats the other puppets.
With the pink puppet then defeating the purple puppet and everyone else involved. The pink is quite feminine and this is post modern. The feminine bear in pink defeats the male aggressor who could be seen as the traditional [Propp] villain.
These last two shots show vulnerability as the person who was in charge has now been defeated and this is shown with a high angle shot looking down on him. This breaks conventions as throughout the video he is dominant however at the end he is defeated. His facial expression and gesture is angry, defiant and stereotypical for a masculine villain.
This then cuts to a low angle shot of the puppets closing on him. I like this idea because it shows an ending of a story which is what I want in my music video.

Planning: Chosen song
The song that me and Charlotte have chosen to use for our music video is Settle down by The 1975. We both feel that we can use this song to our advantage as it is something different and we can work with it to produce a story within our video.
"Settle Down" Lyrics
A soft sound
To the way that she wears her hair down
Covering up her face.
And oh what a let down,
And I don't seem to be having any effect now
Falling all over the place.
But you're losing your words
We're speaking in bodies
Avoiding me and talking 'bout you.
But you're losing your turn
I guess I'll never learn
'Cause I stay another hour or two.
For crying out loud, settle down!
You know I can't be found with you
We get back to my house
Your hands, my mouth
Now I just stop myself around you.
A small town
Dictating all the people we get around
What a familiar face.
Do you get what I mean now?
I'm so fixated on the girl with the soft sound
And hair all over the place.
And you're sure that I'd learn
I'm pushing through bodies
Avoiding me and walking 'round you.
And you're cold and I burn
I guess I'll never learn
'Cause I stay another hour or two.
For crying out loud, settle down!
You know I can't be found with you
We get back to my house
Your hands, my mouth
Now I just stop myself around you.

Research into institutions
Music video channels
- MTV
- Scuzz
- Kiss
- Vh1
- 4Music
- Magic
- JBTV
- Kerrang!
- VIVA
- fuse
From researching into music videos I found that these were the ones that came up most frequently, most of which I have heard of myself or have watched on the TV. However some channels such as Scuzz, JBTV, fuse and Vh1, I haven't heard of before; this could be because they don't show the music genres I listen to or have an interest in, it could also be because I am of a different age to what these channels target.
I had a look on some of the websites for these channels to look for the different advertisement and links that they have. I found that on the '4Music' website, it presents various factors that isn't just the advertisement of the music channel itself. Firstly from the colours, fonts and images used there is a clear target audience they are aiming for which is between 14-20. The websites includes videos, news, charts, shows, photos, apps, and competitions, as well as having links to other social networks.
The 4Music website also advertises other music channels by presenting links to stream the channels online.
From this I can see a clear target audience and the website is made to be interesting, eye catching and informal with access to latest celebrity gossip and news, which I know is something that young people have a big interest in.

Research: The Black Eyed Peas - 'Where is the love?'
This is my mind map showing research into The Black Eyed Peas 'Where is the love?'. Below are two stills from the video that I think represent a great deal and show a lot of meaning in terms of iconic and symbolic signs (society, equality etc).
