Research: Analysis of mise en scene, props and set design

Taylor Swift - Bad Blood

This music video is very unique and different and is set in a futuristic time. It is a narrative video as it tells us a story about various people who are against each other, as well as portraying a powerful message for women to pick themselves up when something or someone is pulling them down, influencing self confidence.

This is a high angle long shot. It is quite voyeuristic and it could be argued that Mulvey's male gaze can be applied. However, the connotations of the red font "Bad Blood" imply not only passion but power and danger.
This is a great angle and something we could target in our video.

This shot is very voyeuristic. The costume is sexual and revealing. It is an interesting set design with the female and the dog in the frame. It is a studio shot; it represents a modern woman. She is a dominant female and as Perkins said " stereotypes are not simple" it signifies woman as strong. It seems impossible to stereotype women in a modern western society. We also want to use a modern strong woman however she does fall for him at the end signifying her vulnerability. Therefore we have both modern and traditional representations.

White is used here to signify a coldness rather than purity and innocence. This is a location shot and the colours have been manipulated and blues and grey levels raised. This is something we could also do.

This is a very futuristic set design. She is now wearing black: Todorov's binary opposition works well here showing the two sides of her. The costume change is effective and this is something we want to do.

This is the end shot. It signifies their dominance and power - the girls against the world. Propps narrative theory is difficult to apply as the main narrative is women against women. there is no traditional villain.

  1. You need analysis here - there are so many genres, signs and signifiers. Consider how these images and signs appealed to a specific target audience. Also, consider the representations created. Voyeurism is used extensively - perhaps you could refer to Mulvey and Blumler and Katz as well?
